The residents have had tests performed on their livestock. Antimony, arsenic, cadmium and lead in the lungs and lights of autopsied lambs.
But the results were dismissed by the Departments - who are still to undertake animal sampling - because, well, there was no dust coming from the crusher...

Stop the bull shit all testing shows there is natural occuring antimony so weather the mine is there or not the antimony is there!!!!. Each time a paddock is plowed cars driven on dirt roads animals in the paddocks antimony is always stirred up. The mine was built there because the antimony &gold was there !!!!!!!!!!

Well, yes, we agree to an extent. The mine offers, by its own estimates, $40 million to the economy of Heathcote and its surrounding areas. This is fantastic news. We are not criticising the mine. Mining is an essential industry. Antimony is a very useful product. Gold is... well, gold. Mines will be mines. But growing without examining the growth? At what cost?
Mining produces dust. A growing mine produces a growing amount of dust. It is the regulators' responsibility to see that this dust - in all of its forms - is kept within limits that do not impact on the public health. This has not happened in Costerfield. That is why this blog is directed at the regulators, not the mine.
We welcome a safe, well-regulated, well-monitored mine.

We direct you to the Department of Energy and Resources website which contains the government's information addressing how the antimony in the dusty roads and plowed paddocks - the naturally occurring antimony - is not the most likely source of the antimony that was found in the people of Costerfield and surrounding areas earlier this year. Surely, the more testing that is conducted, the more sure we can be for ourselves and future generations that the antimony that is allowed to be emitted by the regulators of this mine is safe. It was supposed to have been done already. Better to be safe than sorry. You aren't against us finding out more information are you?
We know that mining for antimony is an historical activity in Costerfield. That does not mean that it was always conducted in a safe manner by today's standards. And it also does not mean that antimony mining should be regulated according to old standards that do not take into account new information. As times change, practices change. Perhaps this is a time for regulatory practice to change, if that is what the new information indicates, don't you think?
Please do read a little more of our blog so that you may understand more fully that we are neither anti-mining nor anti-this mine. We just want mining regulated to a safe standard. And that has not been happening.
